Two women were killed and 13 others were injured and admitted to the Balapitiya Hospital when a van collided with a train at an unprotected level crossing in Meetiyagoda, Daluwatumulla last evening.

The deceased were residents of Meetiyagoda and Thelwatta aged 37 and 49.

The accident occurred when the van had attempted to cross the level crossing disregarding the warning by the railway gatekeeper and had collided with a special train plying from Galle to Colombo.

A monk and 14 women travelling in the van were injured and two women who sustained critical injuries died upon admission to the Balapitiya Hospital.

The driver of the van was arrested in connection with the incident.
