Around 3,000 students and 60 teachers attached to Kurunegala Sir John Kotelawala Vidyalaya had not come to the school yesterday (30), due to the spread of dengue within the school premises.

There are around 4200 students and 165 teachers in this school.

Our correspondent said as of now, 50 students and 15 teachers of this school are being treated for dengue.

School's Deputy Principal, his daughter and the Deputy Principal of the primary division are also hospitalized.

Last week, a grade 6 schoolgirl from the school died of dengue.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a construction site within the school premises has become a major breeding ground for mosquitoes.

It was also found adjacent lands belonging to Kurunegala Plantations Company and Agricultural Ministry of North Western Province also have a number of mosquito breeding places.
