8 individuals swept away while bathing in the Laggala- Thelgamu oya; 5 bodies discovered (Phots)

8 individuals, who were bathing in the Matale- Laggala- Thelgamu oya, disappeared after being swept away in a current.

Police noted that 5 bodies have being found from the missing.

The incident occurred in the Thelgamu oya- Weddapeni ella area.

The knuckles ranger wild life office noted that the group was caught in the current owing to the heavy rains experienced in the knuckles reserve resulting in the sudden rise of water levels in the Thelgamu oya.

The victims are residents of Chilaw- Naaththandiya.

Police noted that 2 businessmen are amongst the group.

12 individuals have engaged in the excursion, and amongst those who were swept away are 2 women, 4 girls, and 2 men.

Currently, the bodies of 2 women, 2 men and one girl have been found.

Army media spokesperson Major General Roshan Seneviratne noted that a team from the navy and the army STF has been deployed besides the police and area residents for search operations.
