‘March 12 Movement’ urges political parties to nominate suitable candidates for LG polls

Tuesday, 07 November 2017 - 18:00

March 12 Movement has sent a letter to political party leaders on the selection of candidates for the upcoming Local Government election.
It said since the preferential voting option is eliminated from the new system, if political parties do not include suitable candidates in the nomination list, the doubled number of representatives in the newly defined local governments will not serve the purpose as expected.
The first local government election under the new system is scheduled to be in late January 2018.
The Movement said the new electoral system contains a number of positive characteristics, but the voter has completely lost the choice of electing their favorite (preferential voting option).
Instead of giving his or her choice to three candidates, this time the voter has to cast the vote to the relevant political party of his /her choice.
