A circular that was issued to fuel stations instructing them to issued petrol only to vehicles, was withdrawn last night (07).

Minister of Petroleum Resources Development Arjuna Ranatunga said that this decision was taken after it was informed that sufficient stocks of petrol are available.

The Minister said although the country’s daily petrol requirement is 2500MT, a total of 3000MT of petrol had been distributed to petrol stations yesterday.

The CPC will distribute another stock of 3000MT of petrol today in order to ease the shortage. According to the Minister, the shortage has been created by ‘panic buying’.

The Ministry added that an oil tanker with 40,000MT of petrol will arrive in Colombo at around 7 pm tonight.

However, long queues are still seen around fuel stations in many parts of the island. It has created traffic congestion as well.

Meanwhile, yesterday a person opposed when a VIP vehicle attempted to obtain petrol from a fuel station disregarding the long queue. The vehicle had arrived there with police protection.
