Election Commission ready to call for nominations for LG polls

The Election Commission says with the gazette notification containing the number of councillors in local government bodies being released, the commission is now in a position to commence the preliminary procedures for calling for nominations.

The 220-page notification details the establishment of Norwood and Maskeliya, Agrapathana and Kotagala Pradeshiya Sabhas.

In addition, Polonnaruwa, Thamankaduwa Pradeshiya Sabha will be split into two as Polonnaruwa Municipal Council and Polonnaruwa Pradeshiya Sabha.

The Election Commission previously stated that calling for nominations will be announced in the week starting on the 27th.

It is expected that the nominations period will fall between the 11th and the 20th of December.

Upon conclusion of nomination activities, returning officers will issue the gazette notification pertaining to the election.

The election must be held within a period of 5 to 7 weeks from the issuance of the gazette notification.

The Election Commission stated that local government elections will be held on a date between the 20th and the 31st of January.

It is said that the election will most likely be held on the 27th of January.

Meanwhile, the Paffrel organization said that the number of councillors specified in the gazette notification is twice as much as the number that was elected during the previous Local Government election.
