Mother-in-law of remanded former Navy intelligence officer commits suicide

The mother-in-law of the former member of the Navy Intelligence Unit, Sumith Ranasinghe, has committed suicide.

Sumith Ranasinghe is on remand for the last 9 months in connection with the alleged abduction and murder of 11 persons in Colombo.

The relevant case was scheduled to be taken up on 10th of November, but it was postponed until 7th of December as the Magistrate was absent on this day.

The lawyer who appeared for the Navy Intelligence officer stated that bail was applied several times but it was rejected due to CID objections.

The wife of Sumith Ranasinghe told our news team that she was living with her two children amid economic burden and, her mother was gravely disappointed as Sumith was not given bail on the last hearing day.

Later she had committed suicide. She was 64-years-old.

Meanwhile, over the past few days, a number of suicide cases were reported from several parts of the country.
