Six private bodyguards of MP Hirunika Premachandra were sentenced to 2 years rigorous imprisonment, suspended for 12 years by Colombo High Court judge R. Gurusinghe today (24).
They were sentenced for abducting a youth in Dematagoda on 21st of December, 2015.

One of the suspects was a schoolboy and he was released following a reprimand.
 
Five of the accused were ordered to compensate the victim Rs. 40,000 each and they were also fined Rs. 33,000 each.
 
One of the other 2 accused was ordered to pay Rs. 75,000 as compensation and the other was asked to pay Rs. 10,000.

On 6th November, excluding MP Hirunika Premachandra, 8 of her private bodyguards pleaded guilty before the Colombo High Court to the charges against them in connection with the abduction.

The Attorney General filed this case against Hirunika Premachandra and 8 of her private bodyguards for abducting a resident of Gotatuwa in Dematagoda and assaulting him.

Hirunika Premachandra and the bodyguards were arrested in connection with this incident and released on bail later.

On 21st of December 2015, a 34-year-old person who was employed at a textile shop in the Baseline Road in Dematagoda was abducted and assaulted by a group of individuals who had arrived in a Defender which was allegedly owned by the MP Hirunika Premachandra.

Police earlier said that the Colombo Crimes Division recorded a statement from an 11-year-old girl who had witnessed the abduction.

The girl was taken to that location by a person who was among the abductors.

The CCD reported details of the girl's statement to the Colombo Chief Magistrate and it was revealed that the abducted person was taken to Hirunika Premachandra.

The girl had stated that she went to meet Hirunika Premachandra with her father and then they went to the Dematagoda textile shop in a black jeep along with several others who were there.

Thereafter, the abducted person had been taken to Hirunika Premachandra.
