South African Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has had his sentence for killing Reeva Steenkamp increased from six years to 13 years and five months.

Pistorius denied killing Steenkamp in a rage, saying he was trying to protect her at his home on Valentine’s Day in 2013.

State lawyers argued that his original sentence of six years was ‘shockingly lenient’.

He was not in court for the ruling where the court handed down the minimum 15-year sentence prescribed for murder in South Africa, minus the time the disgraced star had already served in jail.

The South African Paralympian was initially sentenced to six years for murdering girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp after initially receiving a five-year sentence for manslaughter in 2014.

The jail term was less than half of the 15 years term prosecutors sought for the shooting but previous appeals to challenge it were turned down.
