Met Department forecasts heavy rainfall

Department of Meteorology says that the low-pressure area in the vicinity of Sri Lanka has developed into a depression and it is expected to develop further and move away from the island along the southern coast.
 
The Department said hence, heavy rains, strong winds, and rough seas can be expected further in the deep and shallow sea areas around the island and heavy rains and gusty strong winds about 60-70 kmph over the island.
 
Showers or thundershowers will occur most parts of the island, it added.
 
“Very heavy falls above 150mm can be expected at some places in the Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Western and Uva provinces”, the Department said in its weather forecast for the next 36 hours.
 
Heavy rainfalls above 100 mm can be expected at some places elsewhere.
 
There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers.
 
The Met Office is also urging the general public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.

Meanwhile, the sluice gates of Kotmale Reservoir were opened today due to heavy rainfall which is experiencing in the catchment areas.
