Court seeks 2 reports on tusks of Dala Poottuwa

The Mahawa Magistrate Court has ordered the National Museum and the National Zoological Gardens to produce 2 reports after conducting a special investigation into the pair of tusks and elephant pearls of Galgamuwe Dala Poottuwa.

The Magistrate ordered the respective authorities to carry out the investigations without transporting the pair of tusks and elephant pearls to Colombo, which are currently in the custody of the court.

10 suspects are custody over their alleged links to the killing of the tusker.

Police arrested 2 gramaseva officers yesterday as well, with 3 pendants made out of ivory.

Meanwhile, with the revelation made by our news team, the Department of Wildlife Conservation has taken measures to ensure the safety of Wijayaba tusker of Kawudulla, Minneriya National Park.

Residents in the area say that the tusker which is about 23 years of age, is in the habit of consuming garbage from a waste disposal site in Digampathaha, Habarana.

The residents further said that the tusker has sustained injuries after being shot by poachers on several occasions previously as well.
