The Railway Main Control Room says that all ‘night mail’ trains scheduled for tonight have been cancelled.

The decision has been taken due to the ongoing strike.

Meanwhile, the Locomotive Engineering Operators’ Union said that it will continue the ongoing strike as the discussions they had with the Transport Ministry Secretary G. S. Withanage was failed.

The discussion was held this afternoon (07).
 
The strike was launched last midnight against the recruitment of engine driver assistants, violating the standard recruitment procedure.
 
Locomotive Engineering Operators’ Union Secretary, Indika Dodangoda addressing the media following the discussion said that authorities are still not prepared to address the issue raised by them.
 
Meanwhile, engine driver assistants’ trade union also convened a media conference in Colombo today.
 
Its President Danushka Perera said that the engine driver assistants have been recruited in compliance with the standard procedure.
 
Meanwhile, station masters, controllers, and railway guards are also preparing to launch a strike with effect from tonight over salary issues.
 
A large number of train commuters were affected by the ongoing. Over 200 train journeys were cancelled due to the strike this morning.
