The special gazette notice issued with the signature of President Maithripala Sirisena declaring railway services as an essential service, was passed in Parliament today (11) with majority votes.

52 MPs voted for it while 8 voted against.

Meanwhile, a special discussion is now taking place among railway trade unions about the strike.

The Railway Department also published a notice inviting retired staff to report to work to restore the train services.

Meanwhile, Transport Ministry Secretary, G. S. Withanage said that the Railway Department will inform the strikers, in writing today, that if they do not report to work, they will be considered as having vacated their posts.

The General Mager of Sri Lanka Railways, S. M. Abeywickrama told our news team that about 20 train journeys were carried out by 10 am today (11), despite the strike.
