President Maithripala Sirisena has appealed to the railway employees engaged in a strike to report to duty.

President says that the strikers need to take into consideration the inconveniences faced by the public as well as the students sitting the O/L examination, which begins today (12).

President’s Media Unit said that the President was willing to meet the strikers to discuss their issue.

The railway strike began last Wednesday and the trade unions decided to continue their strike at a special meeting held in Colombo.

Meanwhile, the Additional General Manager of Railways, Wijeya Samarasinghe said that Railway Supervisory Managers who had participated in the strike did report to work yesterday.

The Railway Control Room said that action would somehow be taken to operate few trains today.

However, railway trade unions said that they would implement the strike until the government mediates appropriately to fulfill their demands, which includes a salary increase.

The O/L examinations will be held at 5,116 centers, 688,573 candidates will sit the examination.

The Sri Lanka Transport Board says that more than 750 additional buses have been added to service today.

The students sitting for GCE (o/L) examinations will be able to travel in any bus including private buses, by producing their train season ticket.
