Railway strike continues, police protection enhanced

Security has been beefed up at the railway stations and substations nationwide due to the ongoing strike.
 
The Additional General Manager of Railway, Vijaya Samarasinghe said additional police security has been scaled up to prevent any acts of sabotage.
 
Meanwhile, President Maithripala Sirisena requested the strikers to report for duty taking into consideration the inconveniences faced by the commuters and specifically the students sitting for O/L exam.
 
However, striking trade unions say they would continue their trade union action until their demands are fulfilled.
 
Meanwhile, the Secretary to the President Austin Fernando told us that the strikers are not open to negotiations.
 
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transport in a communiqué said that members of 7 trade unions have reported for duty.
 
However, striking trade unionists stated that members who have reported for duty were not, at any stage, involved in the strike.
