Although the government announced that the railway workers who do not report to work today (12) would be considered to have vacated their posts, the railway workers are adamant that they would continue their strike until their demands are met.

The Convener of the Railway Control Observation Officers' Union, Lal Ariyarathna said that the strikers are willing to discuss if a proper opportunity is given to explain their plight.

Meanwhile, President Maithripala Sirisena appointed a Cabinet Sub-Committee to look into the ongoing railway strike.

Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama will chair the committee while Ministers Dr. Rajitha Senarathna, Ranjith Maddumabandara and Akila Viraj Kariyawasam are the other members of the Committee.

Meanwhile, the Government Nursing Officers' Union said that its members would also demand a pay rise if railway workers’ salaries are increased.
