The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that a joint response will be sent by 3 Ministries with regard to the temporary ban on agri imports including tea imposed by Russia.

The ban is to come in to effect from tomorrow.

The decision to suspend imports came after the detection of an agricultural pest in a tea package imported from Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka accounts for 23 percent of Russia’s tea imports.

The Chairman of Tea Board along with representatives of the Board and Foreign Ministry have held discussions with the Russian Ambassador regarding the matter.

Meanwhile, a report prepared by Russian authorities over the incident which led to the suspension of tea imports from Sri Lanka will be released within next few days.

The Minister of Plantation Industries Navin Dissanayake is also scheduled to visit Russia over the matter.

Sri Lanka has earned 436 Million dollars through tea exports to Russia this year.
