Sri Lanka will send a Technical Evaluation Team to Russia on Monday(25) to look into the issue of finding a beetle in a tea consignment exported to Russia.

The team includes Director General of Department of Agriculture, Head of Sri Lanka Plant Quarantine Unit, and it will also include representatives from Sri Lanka Tea Board and Sri Lanka Tea Research Institute.

The issue arose after Russian authorities decided last week to temporarily ban agri-imports from Sri Lanka following a pest which is known as khapra beetle was found in a tea consignment imported from Sri Lanka.

Russia is one of the biggest importers of Sri Lankan tea.

Sri Lanka’s total trade (both imports and exports) with the Russian Federation which was at $ 435.83 million in 2015 declined to $ 381.71 million in 2016.

This year in January to August period, it reported being around $ 260.78 million.

Sri Lanka has insisted that a thorough investigation will be carried out and that punitive measures will be taken against anyone found guilty of tampering with its consignment.
