President Maithripala Sirisena says that the manner in which Russia had revoked the ban imposed on Sri Lanka’s tea imports was a reflection of cordial friendship between the two countries.

In a Twitter message, the President said, “Sri Lanka's diplomacy with Russia has always been exemplary. The way the tea exports issue is yet another example of this friendship. Prompt action by the government has paid off. This is also a time to thank Russia for cordiality”.

The Russian authorities decided yesterday (25) to revoke the ban with effect from 30th this month.

A delegation of Sri Lankan technical experts set out for Russia yesterday to discuss the matter regarding the ban on tea.

The 9-member technical team included Tea Board Chairman Rohan Pethiyagoda and Director General of Agriculture Department Dr. Rohan Wijekoon.

The Sri Lankan embassy in Moscow said that the team had held discussions with Russia’s Central Government Dairy Resources and representatives from Plant Food Health Services about the ways and means to improve quality standards of goods exported by Sri Lanka to Russia.
