Health Ministry says 112 maternal deaths have been reported in 2016.

Accordingly, the maternal death ratio was 33.8 for 100,000 live births.

The Health Ministry said this was the lowest ratio in South Asia.

Last year, 68% maternal deaths were results of various delays and other reasons were not seeking medical advice at the appropriate time and not making regular visits to hospitals.

The Health Ministry also said delays in health staff have contributed directly or indirectly to the deaths of 44 mothers.

A report published by the Ministry pointed out that 55% of the reported maternal deaths could have been avoided.
