The Central Environmental Authority announces that using high-density polythene including lunch sheets and manufacturing and selling of related products will be prohibited from tomorrow (Jan. 01).

The ban was imposed on the 1st of September but a grace period was given later on until tomorrow.

Furthermore, using décorations made of polythene for any ceremony including national, religious, social, cultural and political will be prohibited as well.

The Chairman of the Central Environmental Authority, Professor Lal Mervyn Dharmasiri said that vendors who sell polythene will be raided from tomorrow.

However, the All Ceylon Polythene Manufacturers' and Recyclers' Association charged that the government has not yet provided any concession it had pledged to polythene manufacturers.

Meanwhile, speaking at a press briefing convened in Colombo today (Dec. 31), the National Organizer of Sri Lanka Eatery Owners’ Association, Asela Sampath stated that prices of food items will have to be increased in the future as a result of this issue.
