Cabinet meeting 'tense' due to fertilizer issue

The prevailing fertilizer shortage in the country was discussed at length during the Cabinet meeting yesterday (Jan. 02).

The Minister of Disaster Management, Anura Priyadharshana Yapa has requested to provide fertilizer to farmers for free.

He had pointed out that due to drought and other natural causes that farmers were unable to cultivate properly for 3 consecutive seasons.

Plans are mooted to import 75,000 MT of fertilizer by both the state and private sector from Pakistan.

However, due to restrictions in Pakistan for fertilizer exports, it is being delayed, the Minister of Agriculture Duminda Dissanayake had said.

He pointed out that the shortage will be addressed with the arrival of those stocks.

Speaking thereafter, President Maithripala Sirisena had instructed the Ministers to take steps to provide enough fertilizer for farmers.
