President makes special statement on Bond report

President Maithripala Sirisena made a special statement on the report and the recommendations of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry that probed the alleged bond scam.

The President said that he would take actions to retrieve the losses amounting to Rs. 11,145 million from those who are accused of the bond scam.

He added that steps will be taken to move legal action against the accused.

The Commission report said that the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe should not have acted upon promises given by the then Governor of the Central Bank, Arjuna Mahendran.

The Commission has also recommended filing cases against former Minister Ravi Karunanayake, who had given false evidence, under the Bribery and Corruption Act and the Penal Code.

The President also said that the Commission report has already been sent to the Attorney General recommending future legal actions through the Criminal Investigation Department and Bribery Commission. 

The Commission has also recommended probing the bond issuances took place during the 2008-2015 period.

The Presidential Commission of Inquiry on the alleged bond scam handed over their report to President Maithripala Sirisena on 30th of December.
