Today marks the 3rd anniversary of President Maithripala Sirisena assuming the office as the President of Sri Lanka.
 
Contesting the Presidential Election on 8th of January 2015 as the common opposition candidate, President Maithripala Sirisena was elected as the country’s 6th Executive President, with over 6.2 million votes.
 
Several state functions have been organized today in commemoration of the anniversary.
 
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's largest multi-functional irrigation project, Moragahakanda-Kalu Ganga Multi-Purpose Development Project will be commissioned today.
 
The commissioning ceremony has been organized with President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as Chief Guests.
 
The President will ceremonially release water from Moragahakanda reservoir at the auspicious time of 11.20 this morning to mark the completion of the project which commenced on 25th of January, 2007.
 
The project was expedited over the last three years under the guidance of the President.
 
The event will be followed by another opening ceremony in Polgolla, Kandy at 3.30 pm, to mark the completion of Mahaweli Development Programme.
 
The President will also participate in the opening ceremony for the Rajagiriya flyover.
 
The project, at a cost of Rs. 4.7 billion was financed via a soft loan of Rs, 4.3 billion from the Government of Spain.
