The nursing staff of the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital has continued their work stoppage for a 6th day today (Jan. 08).

The strike was launched on last Wednesday, voicing their opposition to the introduction of fingerprint machines to mark attendance.

The nurses' unions said they have decided to continue the strike as the hospital authorities have not responded to their demands.

Accordingly, the hospital administration has decided to suspend daily functions and surgeries at the hospital.

The All Ceylon Nurses’ Union said that protests will be held in front of other hospitals throughout the country in support of the strike at the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital.

Meanwhile, the hospital authorities have already obtained a court order against the strike from the Nugegoda District Court.

However, Union’s National Organizer, S. B. Medawatta told our news team that his union has not yet received such a court ruling.

The Director of the hospital Dr. Susitha Senarathna confirms that several paying wards have been closed and all scheduled surgeries have been suspended due to the nurses’ strike.
