President describes how Moragahakanda dream became a reality

President Maithripala Sirisena says that he was able to make the Moragahakanda Multi-Purpose Development Project a reality to solve the prolonged need for water faced by the people in Rajarata.

The President said this speaking at the state ceremony organized to mark the completion of the 5th reservoir under the Mahaweli Development Project at the Polgolla reservoir this afternoon (Jan. 08).

Later, addressing the gathering, President Sirisena said all successive governments, which came into power after 1993 failed to complete the construction of this project.

The President also proposed during his address to name the Moragahakanda Project after one of the most renowned Engineers in the country, Dr. A.N.S. Kulasinghe.

Meanwhile, the Moragahakanda Multipurpose Development Project which is the largest to be built in 4 decades was commissioned by the President at the auspicious time at 11.21 this morning.

The capacity of the Moragahakanda reservoir is 6 times higher than the Parakkrama Samudraya.

It can irrigate 300,000 acres of new land, thereby benefiting 1.5 million individuals and providing drinking water to 300,000 residents.

Earlier in the day, President Maithripala Sirisena declared open the fly-over built at a cost of 4,700 million rupees at Rajagiriya.

The President proposed to name the Rajagiriya fly-over after late Venerable Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera.
