The Supreme Court says that the decision on duration of the term of Office of President will be conveyed to President Maithripala Sirisena.

A 5-member bench today (Jan. 11) considered the reference sent to Chief Justice by President Sirisena at an open court on this matter.

The bench headed by Chief Justice Priyasath Dep also included Eva Wanasundera, Buwaneka Aluwihare, Sisira de Abrew and K. T. Chitrasiri.

In a letter sent to the Chief Justice on Monday (Jan. 08), the President sought the view of the Supreme Court whether his term of Office is 6 years or 5 years.

He wanted the opinion to be conveyed to him on or before 14th of this month.

Meanwhile, issuing a media communique, the President's Media Unit said the due to the enactment of the 19th amendment, two different views are being expressed in the legal, civil and political areas with regard to the duration of President's term of Office.

It added President had asked the Supreme Court's opinion in order to avoid the confusion.

Meanwhile, when the petition was taken up, the Joint Opposition made submissions saying that the term of Office should be 5 years.
