The Supreme Court has informed that according to the 19th amendment the duration of the term of office of President Maithripala Sirisena is 5 years.

The Supreme Court informed its opinion to the reference made on 8th of January by the President if there are impediments for him to stay in office until 2021.

President, Maithripala Sirisena who won the election on January 8, 2015, was sworn in as the President the following day.

According to the Constitution, the stipulated term of office was 6 years, when President Sirisena was sworn in.

However, the duration of the term of office of the President was subsequently, curtailed to 5 years by the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.

Later, Chief Justice Priyasath Dep appointed a panel of 5 member Supreme Court Judges under his chairmanship to consider the enquiry made by the President over his tenure of office.

Justice Eva Wanasundara, Justice Buwaneka Aluvihare, Justice K.T.Chithrasiri and Justice Sisira de Abrew were the other members of the bench that considered the enquiry.

The bench which considered the President’s enquiry decided that the duration of the term of office of the President is 5 years.
