The General Secretary of United People’s Freedom Alliance, Minister Mahinda Amaraweera says the private helicopter that he was onboard bound to Jaffna would have crashed into the sea, had it remained in air few more minutes.

On Sunday, the Minister had left for Jaffna in a private helicopter. However, the pilot who had failed to find the way to Palaly Airport and then a security officer who was with the Minister had realized that the flight was taking too long to land.

The flight was moving towards Talai Mannar. Then with the help of the Google Map, they were able to locate Palaly and land there with the help of the Sri Lanka Air Force.

The Minister explained his experience at a media conference in Colombo yesterday (Jan. 15).

"I attended the Thai Pongal ceremony by a private airplane. The pilot failed to locate the Palaly Airport while we were on our way. We were airborne for about 30 to 40 minutes more, and finally, we made it. There was some issue with the fuel. Had we stayed airborne any longer, we would have ended in the sea," the Minister said.
