The Ceylon Electricity Board employees took the chairman of the CEB hostage yesterday (Jan. 17) following a dispute over salary increase.

Then the riot police and Special Task Force personnel stepped in and rescued the CEB chief.

The trade union representatives charged that they were assaulted in the process.

It was reported that the trade union members have kept the chairman in their custody for around 5 hours.

Hospital sources said 5 CEB employees admitted to the Accident Ward last night following the incident and later they were discharged.

In protest against the alleged assault, the convener of the CEB Trade Union Alliance, Ranjan Jayalal said that they would launch an indefinite strike from 9 am today (Jan. 18).

In response, the spokesperson of Power and Renewable Energy, Sulakshana Jayawardena said the ministry is ready to face any strike.
