The Ceylon Electricity Board workers have called off their strike, which was started yesterday.

The Joint Trade Union Federation of the CEB launched the island-wide strike this morning (Jan. 18) alleging that they were assaulted by the law enforcement authorities during last night's commotion at the CEB headquarters.

The CEB headquarters was surrounded by workers last night saying that the management has increased the salaries only of the administrative staff.

Later, CEB chairman, W. B. Ganegala was held hostage in his office and police had to intervene to rescue him.

Thereafter, 5 CEB workers admitted to the Accident Ward of the National Hospital for treatment and they were discharged later.

Meanwhile, chairman of the Electricity Engineers' Association, Saumaya Kumarawadu said that CEB workers had been recently awarded a salary increment of 25%.
