One person was killed when a police officer opened fire on a motorcycle which had sped away without heeding to a police signal to stop.

The incident had taken place at around 10.55 last night (Jan. 20), in the Kataragama town.

According to police, a police constable and a civil defence force officer while noticing a motorcycle heading towards Wadihitikanda road, had signalled the rider to stop.

But when he had sped away, the policeman had opened fire at him and later he was admitted to Kataragama Hospital with critical injuries, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Afterwards, residents in the area had staged a protest and even hurled stones at the police.

Tear gas had been used to bring the situation under control.

However, the situation has been brought under control and security has been tightened in the area.

The victim was a 44-year-old resident of Kataragama.

The postmortem will be conducted today and the policeman has been arrested.

Further investigations are conducted under the Tangalle Superintendent of Police.
