Attorney General's Department says it will file charges against Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake for making statements which are contempt of court.

Appearing for the Attorney General, the Additional Solicitor General, Priyantha Naavana informed this in the Supreme Court today (Jan. 22).

The petition against Deputy Minister Ramanayake which accuses him of making a statement of contempt of court was taken up before a bench of 3 Supreme Court judges.

The 3-member bench included Justice, Sisira de Abrew, Justice Nalin Perera, and Justice Vijith Malalgoda.

The petition against Deputy Minister Ramanayake was filed by a group led by Ven. Maagalkande Sudaththa Thera.

After this petition was called on 14th of December last year, the Deputy Minister, addressing the media outside the courtroom criticized the actions of certain judges.

The Additional Solicitor General said that the Attorney General’s Department has obtained the voice recording from the media institutions in which the Deputy Minister said that the majority of the judges are corrupt.

He said the voice recording will be sent to the Attorney General after it has been submitted to the panel of judges today.

The Additional Solicitor General also said charges will be filed against the Deputy Minister after recording is studied by the Attorney General.

The Supreme Court thereafter postponed the petition until 23rd of March 2018.
