The Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission has issued summons to 7 respondents including Uva Provincial Education Secretary, Sandhya Ambanwela in connection to the incident where the principal of Badulla Tamil Girls’ School had been forced to kneel by the Chief Minister of Uva Chamara Sampath Dassanayake.

The respondents have been asked to appear before the Commission and amongst the respondents are 2 media personnel.

The summonses have been issued following complaints made by the Sri Lanka Human Rights Circle and Sri Lanka Teachers' Association.

They while making the complaint pointed out that the freedom of speech and the independence of conscience assured by the Constitution have been violated in this incident.

Meanwhile, Sendhil Thondaman was sworn in as the Provincial Tamil Education Minister this morning (Jan. 24).

This portfolio did not exist prior to the incident.

The Provincial Governor removed Uva Chief Minister Chamara Sampath Dassanayake from his provincial Education portfolio after he was accused of forcing the principal to kneel before him.
