8 persons including 2 Provincial Councillors who received injuries during the tense situation erupted in the Uva Provincial Council premises were admitted to Badulla Hospital today (Jan. 25).

The 2 Council members were assaulted while they were arriving at the Provincial Council to participate in the council session this morning.

Later police were called in to control the situation.

Our correspondent said that a group of supporters of Senthil Thondaman who was sworn in as the Tamil Education Minister of the Province yesterday was waiting at the Provincial council premises to welcome the new Minister when the clash occurred.

At this juncture, Uva Opposition Leader R. M. Ratnayake and UNP Councillors A. Ganeshamurthi and Upali Senarathna arrived at the Council by around 10 am.

A tense situation erupted as a group of onlookers assaulted Councillor Ganeshamurthi as he got down his vehicle.
Later, new Tamil Education Minister, Senthil Thondaman arrived at the scene.

Councillor Ganeshamurthi of Ceylon Workers Congress was elected to the Uva Provincial Council under the UPFA ticket.

However, he crossed over to the UNP on 8th of December last year.

Following today's session, Councillors Ganeshmurthi and Upali Senaratne admitted to Badulla Hospital.

Meanwhile, another group of 6 persons also admitted to the hospital saying that they were assaulted by the 2 councillors.

However, police said no one was arrested for the clash.
