A 7-year-old child from Mandapola in Hettipola, Kuliyapitiya had died after consuming a fruit which is known as ivy gourd.

The fruit is locally known as Kovakka.

A spokesperson from Kuliyapitiya Hospital said that at the time the child had consumed the fruit when his parents were not at home.

The child had fallen unconscious immediately after consuming the fruit as his sugar level had dropped drastically.

Later, the neighbours took the child to the hospital. However, he was already dead by the time they reached the hospital.

Meanwhile, our correspondent said that the child’s nose had been bitten by mice as his body was kept at the hospital’s mortuary.

When we contacted Judicial Medical Officer of the Kuliyapitiya Hospital, Dr. Ajith Jayasena said that the mortuary is currently under renovation, therefore, post-mortems are conducted in the hospital’s garage.
