A majority of the backbenchers of the United National Party parliamentarians has reportedly made a request from the UNP Working Committee and party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to remove former Minister Ravi Karunanayake from the post of Assistant Leader and appoint a senior UNP leader for that post.

The Presidential Commission of Inquiry which probed the bond scam has also recommended taking action against Karunanayake for allegedly taking favours from the main culprits of the bond scam.

The UNP backbenchers have also pointed out under these circumstances Karunanayake addressing UNP election rallies would be unfavourable for the party.
