A legal glitch has caused a delay in the repatriation of former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia, Udayanga Weeratunga who was arrested at Dubai Airport by Interpol.

A senior officer attaché to the Financial Crimes Investigation Division said that the Sri Lankan Government and the Government of United Arab Emirates are currently having discussions to solve the issue.

The Interpol sleuths arrested Weeratunga at Dubai Airport while he was heading to the USA yesterday (Feb. 04).

The FCID has been investigating Weeratunga under the Money Laundering Act in connection with the MIG deal.

Earlier, Fort Magistrate, Lanka Jayarathna had issued an arrest warrant against Weeratunga.

Meanwhile, Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa pointed out that Weeratunga could be brought down to the country only through diplomatic links.

He said Sri Lanka is yet to reach an agreement with the UAE on the transfer of suspects arrested by the Interpol.
