Japanese astronaut Norishige Kanai has completed his first spacewalk outside the International Space Station.

Kanai and a US astronaut ventured outside the ISS at around 12:00 UTC on Friday. They remained outside for about 6 hours.

The astronauts were tasked with retrieving the old mechanical hands from the station's 17-meter robotic arm. Mechanical hands are used to catch cargo spacecraft sent from Earth.

The 2 were also able to complete additional tasks because they finished their initial assignments early.

Kanai is the 4th Japanese astronaut to conduct a spacewalk. He is the first to do so in about 5 years.
