It is reported the General Secretary of the United People’s Freedom Alliance Minister Mahinda Amaraweera had handed over a letter to the President last night (Feb. 18) saying that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party is seriously considering leaving the Unity Government.

A senior SLFP Minister told our news team that a final decision regarding this will be taken at the Parliamentary group meeting scheduled to be held today.

The President will then move to seek the view of the Supreme Court regarding the appointment of a new Prime Minister.

The UPFA MPs had informed the President last night that their stance regarding the Good Governance Government, was that, it would be appropriate for the SLFP to leave the government if SLFP cannot establish a government of its own.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Speaker Karu Jayasuriya met with President Maithripala Sirisena last afternoon.

Sources disclosed that at that meeting Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had informed the President that he would not step down from the office of Prime Minister.
