Train drivers threaten to strike"

Locomotive Engineering Operators' Union says they would launch an island-wide strike if actions are not taken to arrest those who pelted stones at the Colombo bound Night Mail train at Trincomalee last night (Feb. 20).

The LEOU secretary Indika Dodangoda said they have already decided not to operate trains to Trincomalee, due to this reason.

A 22-year-old young woman committed suicide by jumping before the Colombo bound train in Trincomalee at around 7.30 last night.

Police said she had committed suicide as a result of a family dispute.

Following this incident, the relatives of the deceased had pelted stones at the train causing extensive damages to the train engine.

Later, the authorities fixed another engine to the Night Mail train to take it to Colombo.

As a result, the train was delayed by 2 hours to reach Colombo Fort.
