Locomotive Engineering Operators' Union says they have suspended the strike which they started this morning (Feb. 21) deciding not to operate trains to be started from Trincomalee to Colombo and from Colombo to Trincomalee.

They launched the strike urging the authorities to arrest those who pelted stones at the Colombo bound Night Mail train at Trincomalee last night.

The LEOU secretary Indika Dodangoda earlier said they had decided not to operate trains to Trincomalee until suspects are arrested.

A 22-year-old young woman committed suicide by jumping before the Colombo bound train in Trincomalee at around 7.30 last night.

Police said she had committed suicide as a result of a family dispute.

Following this incident, the relatives of the deceased had pelted stones at the train causing extensive damages to the train engine.

Later, the authorities fixed another engine to the Night Mail train to take it to Colombo.

As a result, the train was delayed by 2 hours to reach Colombo Fort.

Later police arrested three persons who had allegedly pelted stones at the train last night.
