Interpol has issued a Red Notice to arrest the former Ambassador of Russia Udayanga Weeratunga.

He is wanted by Sri Lankan law enforcement authorities for his alleged links with financial irregularities in the acquisition of MIG aircraft to Sri Lanka Air Force in 2006.

Interpol had initially issued a blue notice.

The Financial Crimes Investigation Division had mentioned Weeratunga as a suspect in the MIG deal.

It was also revealed that the former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia had involved in the transaction, and that large deposits of funds had been made to his bank accounts in Sri Lanka from overseas during the time of the deal was taking place.

The court issued an open warrant to have Weeratunga arrested on 20th of October last year.

The transactions in 16 personal bank accounts with a balance amounting to nearly 1.7 million dollars were also suspended.

Even though his term as Ambassador ended on the 28th of February 2015, he had failed to hand over or cancel his diplomatic passport.

Earlier this month, Weeratunga was detained at Abu Dhabi International Airport while on transit to get onboard a flight to the USA.

Later, Sri Lanka sent a team to the UAE in an attempt to bring Weeratunga to Sri Lanka.

But it was unsuccessful, as they did not possess a Red Notice issued by the Interpol.
