The Rajanganaya Water project which was the cause of the protest in Thambuttegama town has been temporarily halted.

Anuradhapura District Secretary R. M. Wannianayake told our news team that he has informed this decision to the officials of the Water Supply and Drainage Board.

Wannianayake said that the cabinet had approved this project to provide drinking water and the project was to be spearheaded by the private sector.

Yesterday (Feb.28), farmers launched a protest against the project, disrupting transportation in the Padeniya- Anuradhapura road for nearly 3 hours, stating that the project will adversely impact their farming activities.

Though the Thambuttegama Magistrate issued an injunction against the protest, the farmers disregarded the court order and continued their protest.

Thereafter police sued tear gas and water cannon to disperse the protestors.

5 police officers and protesters, who were injured in the incident, were admitted to the hospital for treatment.

50individuals who were arrested for disobeying the court order will be in remand until the 5th of this month.

Meanwhile, the National Police Commission has decided to call for a report from the IGP regarding yesterday’s protest.

The IGP has been asked to submit the report immediately in order to investigate the incident.
