The National Water Supply and Drainage Board says plans were mooted to implement the Thamnuttegama Water Project considering the drinking water scarcity in several areas and rising incidents of kidney disease.

The NWSDB said Chinese Development Bank will provide financial assistance for the project.

This project was planned with the consent of the Department of Irrigation and it was planned to pump out 19,800 cubic meters of water per day, the NWSDB said.

Under this project, it was planned to provide water to Thambuttegama, Galnewa, and Thalawa Divisional Secretariat areas from the Rajanganaya Tank.

The Board said this project was not a water-bottling project.

The NWSDB said that the stakeholders should come to a common agreement to take this project forward.

On 28th of last month, the farmer associations staged a protest blocking the Anuradhapura-Padeniya road for about 3 hours.

Later, the protestors clashed with the police and the protestors were dispersed using tear gas and water cannon.

Thereafter, police arrested 60 persons including the President of the farmer association.

51 of them were remanded.
