The container drivers and assistants have decided to launch a strike from today (Mar. 05).

The trade union's secretary, B. I. Abdeen said they would launch the strike to protest against handing over of checking and weighing of containers with imported goods to the private sector.

He pointed out they are forced to drive to Orugodawatte to get the clearance and it has caused undue delays and traffic congestion on the main roads in the area.

Abdeen said although they have raised this issue with the authorities a number of times, the authorities have failed to find a favourable solution.

Meanwhile, the strike launched by university non-academics citing 5 demands is continuing for a 6th day today (Mar. 05).
