Curfew has been imposed in the Kandy administrative district from 4 pm to 4 pm tomorrow.

Police Media Spokesperson, SP, Ruwan Gunesekera said that curfew was imposed by the IGP under the provisions of the State of Emergency.

He said that except for public servants, policemen and tri-forces personnel, no one will be allowed to assemble or stay at public places during this period.

Meanwhile, leave for all ranks of policemen have been cancelled with immediate effect.

Meanwhile, a decision has been taken to deploy 3 special police teams under the supervision of 3 DIG and 3 SPs in the Kandy district. This decision was taken during a discussion presided over by the IGP at the Police headquarters this morning (Mar. 07).

In addition, 8 persons who were arrested in connection with having behaved in an unruly manner yesterday, were remanded until 19th of March after they were produced before Kandy Magistrate.

Meanwhile, social media sites including Facebook, Viber and Imo and WhatsApp have been blocked until further notice.

The Telecommunication Regulatory Commission stated the decision was taken considering the prevailing situation in Kandy.

At the same time, all government schools in Kandy are closed indefinitely. The Education Minister said that the decision was taken after curfew was imposed in the district.

Meanwhile, the 101st big match between the Trinity College and the St. Anthony’s College in Kandy has been postponed indefinitely due to the current situation.

Earlier, the match was scheduled for March 9 and 10 at Pallekelle International Cricket Stadium. In addition, the big match between the Kandy, Vidyartha College and the St. Sylvester College has also been postponed.
