UNHRC raises concerns over situation in Sri Lanka

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zaid Al Rad Hussein says he's alarmed by the current situation in Sri Lanka.
 
He mentioned this while delivering his message to the member countries at the 37th session of the UNHRC.
 
Prince Hussein said the UN member states would be encouraged to explore the use of universal jurisdiction in the absence of progress in accountability and transitional justice.
 
He added, "There should be no impunity either for the incitement that led to the violence or the attack themselves"
 
At the same time, the European Union issuing a communiqué said that the criminals who engaged in malicious crimes should be brought to book with immediate effect.
 
The communiqué added, "The EU trusts that any actions taken under the State of Emergency will be proportionate and respect constitutional rights and freedoms".
 
The EU said that it is vital that all political leaders, religious and other community leaders condemn violence and make every effort to promote understanding and harmony between communities.
 
Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Geng Shun said the Sri Lankan government and its people have the ability to control the existing situation in the country.
 
Expressing his views on the current situation, he said that he is confident the Sri Lankan Government will take steps to ensure the safety of Chinese expatriates in Sri Lanka.
 
Meanwhile, the Curfew imposed in Kandy on last afternoon (Mar. 07) was temporarily lifted at 10 this morning.
 
The Government Information Department stated that President Maithripala Sirisena had decided to lift curfew after receiving several requests from the public to do so.
 
It was announced that the curfew will be re-imposed at 6 this evening.
 
Earlier, it was announced that the curfew imposed at 4 last evening would continue until 4 this evening.
