Police investigate links to Hettiyawatte shooting

Police investigations reveal that last night’s (Mar. 08) shooting in Hettiyawatte is related to the underworld.
 
Three persons were injured when a gunman on a motorcycle opened fire at a group of people at the Hettiyawatte Junction at around 7.30 pm.
 
One of them, a 29-year-old man succumbed to his injuries at the National Hospital Colombo.
 
Police confirmed that the deceased, as well as other two, were fruit sellers in Pettah.
 
It is believed that the shooting took place in response to their failure to repay money that was owed to the underworld gang lead by Keselwatte Dinuka, who is currently hiding overseas.
 
Police said that a relative of Dinuka recently escaped being shot at, while he was driving a vehicle on the Hunupitiya Cross Road in Kiribathgoda.
 
Dinuka’s relative is also a fruit seller.
 
Police believe those two incidents are inter-linked.
 
Meanwhile, Mt. Lavinia Police have initiated an investigation relating to the shooting of Western Provincial Councillor, Amal Silva on the Kaldemulla Road at Golumadama Junction in Ratmalana last night.
 
Silva had sustained injuries to his legs and now being treated at the hospital.
 
Police have used CCTV footage to identify the suspect who fled the scene soon after the shooting.
 
Provincial Councilor Silva was arrested by Mt. Lavinia Police on the 30th of last September with 3 bullets in his possession.
 
He was arrested based on information revealed by a drug trafficker.
