Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam says that schools in Kandy which were remained closed due to the tense situation that prevailed in the area, will be reopened tomorrow.

All schools in Kandy district were closed since the 7th of this month due to the incidents which took place in Kandy.

The situation in Kandy has now completely returned to normal, police say.

However, authorities say that police and STF personnel will continue to be deployed in the area to ensure law and order.

Police Media Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara disclosed that 161 persons were arrested in Kandy in connection with the recent violence while 69 more were arrested from other parts of the island.

Minister of Law and Order and Public Administration Ranjith Madduma Bandara said that those responsible for the recent violence will be brought to justice.

Meanwhile, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission said that most social media sites which were blocked temporarily to prevent the spread of hate speech, are likely to be unblocked tomorrow.

Meanwhile, 2 school students who were arrested for using the internet to incite racial disharmony have been remanded till 22nd of this month.

The students who are residents of Minuwangoda and Homagama have been ordered to be detained at the Makola Detention Centre for Youth.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that he has given out instructions to the Attorney General’s Department to take action against all those who were responsible for the recent incidents in Kandy.

The Premier expressed these views following an event in Wellampitiya.
